The rapidly changing world and the advent of the Information Society, with the continuous change of working conditions and the evolution of information and communication technologies, boost the needs for updating people’s knowledge and skills.

Current situation:

  • Recent efforts in the area of learning technology have resulted in a considerable improvement in the interoperability of learning resources across different Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Object Repositories (LOR). The central paradigm of such reuse-oriented technology is the notion of learning objects (LO) as digital reusable pieces of learning activities or contents.
  • These composite objects are described by using existing metadata standards and contain the learning resources - the physical data assets – as well as a description of the learning process to be followed by the learner. This approach limits the re-usability of such composite learning objects as well as restricts the ability of a learning application to adapt dynamically to specific learning demands and contexts.

LUISA aims to:

  • address one essential problem, which is the location of (the appropriate) learning resources for some given needs (of learners, instructors or groups)
  • changing this data - or content-based paradigm to an highly dynamic service-oriented approach based on semantic web services (SWS) technologies.
